Leadership Camps at John Knox Ranch challenge young people to grow in mind, body, spirit, and faith. As high schoolers move into the early stages of young adulthood and into ever-increasing independence and responsibilities, they need concrete ways to explore what it means to be a leader. Campers grow in their leadership abilities, make new friends, see amazing sights, discover their gifts, have fun, and learn to work with a group.
While participation in first year Leadership Camps naturally leads into participation in second year camps (LID 2), campers do not have to have participated in one to do the other. As they continue to grow older, many Leadership Camp participants elect to return to John Knox Ranch to serve as Junior Counselors, Counselors in Training, or Summer Staff. For more detailed information about any of our Leadership Development Camps, or to ask questions, please drop us a line.
Note: Scholarships are available, and are awarded based on need. A scholarship application will be e-mailed to you once you have registered your camper.
High Adventure Camp offers those who want to experience closer-to-home challenges based out of JKR. Campers will make several day trips to experience adventure, whether it be rock climbing, indoor sky diving, zip-lining, or other activities!
Service, Sun, and Sailing Camp focuses on one of the central values of Christian leadership: Service. Campers will have multiple opportunities to engage in hands-on servant leadership, all while reflecting on their own growing leadership gifts & skills. Plus, they will have some fun in the sun sailing on Canyon Lake! Campers will receive a certificate documenting completion of 20 service hours (great for college apps, NHS, or school requirements).
The Backpack Adventure Camp takes campers to Colorado (near Duncan Park; you get to FLY!) for a 4 day/3night hike through the glorious Rocky Mountains and the Roosevelt National Forest. JKR partners with the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas for this trip, utilizing their train guides and expertise from their Colorado site and facilities. Campers are challenged mentally as well as physically, so a measure of fitness and maturity is required for this trip.
Campers will meet at John Knox Ranch on Saturday, July 15. On Sunday, they will fly from San Antonio to Denver. After two days at Duncan Park spent acclimating to the altitude and learning back country tips and etiquette, the group will hike into the mountains for adventure. Carrying all necessary items in backpacks and traversing mountain streams can be tough, but the views and the feeling of accomplishment make it all worthwhile!
Campers return to San Antonio on Saturday, July 22. Pickup will be at JKR at 4:00 p.m., or at 2:00 p.m. at the San Antonio airport.
LID 2 campers spend two (2) weeks at JKR delving deeper into what it means to be a servant leader. LID 2 participants hone their leadership skills by shadowing Junior Counselors at Day Camp, by helping lead activities, and by reflecting on what makes a good leader (and how that applies to life and faith). There is no pre-requisite for participating in LID 2.
