Job Opportunities

We are thrilled that you are interesting in working at John Knox Ranch this summer! Serving as part of the Summer Staff at JKR is an honor and a privilege. You will work hard, but your life will be enriched because you will make a difference in the lives of children and youth. Please read over the various summer job descriptions, and give some thought as to how your gifts and talents might make the biggest impact at summer camp. Please make sure that you are available for all staff training and employment dates. If you are unable to be here for all of the dates, please call or email JKR Staff about those times you must be absent prior to employment.

Important dates:

  • May 20 -27 Program Staff Training
  • May 28-June 6 Summer Staff Training (Counselors & Program Staff)
  • June 4–6 Junior Counselor & Counselor in Training Orientation
  • June 7–10 Summer Camp starts with Mini-Camp
  • June 11–July 29 Summer Camp
  • July 30–August 3 Camp Braveheart (we serve as staff)
  • August 4–5 Finish up summer camp work

Staff receive three hours off each day, as well as scheduled 24-hour breaks. We also have a 5 day break in the middle of the summer (noon July 1-July 5 @ 2 pm).

Counselor

Summer Camp Counselors live with 5 to 9 campers and act as friend, parent, guide, mentor and disciplinarian to the campers throughout the week. Working alongside and with a co-counselor, they lead activities for their cabin of campers. For 1 to 2 weeks out of the summer, a counselor may be put in a support staff role. As support staff, an individual can expect to lifeguard, help in the kitchen, and do light maintenance. In all areas, counselors help foster a climate of spiritual growth. Counselors will receive pre-camp training and preparation, including Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR/AED certification. Age: 18 and up, preferred one year of college.

Counselor in Training

The Counselor in Training Program is part of JKR's Leadership Development Program, with 2 sessions each summer (two 3-week sessions). The CIT program is essentially the 2nd year of the Junior Counselor program - designed with more responsibilities and expanding learning opportunities. CITS will be assigned to a cabin in an apprentice role. CITS live on-site with different cabin groups each week, shadowing Summer Counselors in their work. All CITs must participate in a 3-day orientation before the first week of camp (June 4-6). Age: Recent High School graduates, those having completed their Senior Year of high school.

Junior Counselor

Our Junior Counselor (JC) Program is part of JKR's Leadership Development Program, with 2 sessions each summer (two 3-week sessions. JCs live on-site with different cabin groups each week. During the day, JCs supervise Day Campers; in the evenings, JCs help Counselors with their Resident Camp cabin groups. All JCs must participate in a 3-day orientation before the start of the summer (Dates: June 4-6). Age: Rising High School seniors.

Summer Camp Program Assistant

The Summer Program Assistant will work with the Executive Director to supervise staff and camp activities on a continual basis; write mid- and end-of-summer staff evaluations; help plan, organize and lead staff training and summer program activities; manage the waterfronts; facilitate evening activities; handle any discipline problems as they arise (with assistance); as well as help out with any and all aspects of camp at all times. As part of the JKR Staff, this person will receive pre-camp training and preparation, including Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR/AED certification, and be expected to serve in these areas as needed. Age: 21 and up, preferred 3 years of college/graduate.

Day Camp/Junior Counselor Director (2)

Day Camp/JC Directors (1 male and 1 female) plan, coordinate and lead the 7-week Day Camp program for 3-10 year-olds. They also oversee the Junior Counselor program, consisting of orientation, Day Camp supervision, Resident Camp supervision, break time activities and spiritual development of Junior Counselors. Day Camp/JC Directors will work with the Executive Director and Summer Program Assistant to plan and implement schedule of activities for participants. As part of the JKR Staff, these persons will receive pre-camp training and preparation, including Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR/AED certification, and be expected to serve in these areas as needed. Age: 21 and up, preferred 3 years of college.

Ropes Director (2)

The Ropes Directors (2 positions available) are responsible for leading campers through high and low challenge activities as well as climbing and rappelling activities. They must possess leadership skills, knowledge and the willingness to participate in all of these activities. Ropes Directors will work with Summer Camp Director and will be responsible for checking equipment, logging equipment usage, and maintaining and enforcing all safety policies at all times. This person must be certified in both low and high ropes, or be willing to be certified. As part of the JKR Staff, these persons will receive pre-camp training and preparation, including Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR/AED certification, and be expected to serve in these areas as needed. Age: 21 and up, preferred 3 years of college.

Leadership Development Director (2)

The Leadership Development Directors (1 male and 1 female) will oversee Leaders in Development (LID) program, consisting of our trip and travel camps, High Adventure camp, and advanced LID 2 program. LID Program Managers will work with the Executive Director and Summer Program Assistant before camp to plan and implement the LID curriculum, which will consist of learning leadership skills, both personally and within group settings. As part of the JKR Staff, these persons will receive pre-camp training and preparation, including Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR/AED certification, and be expected to serve in these areas as needed. Age: 20 and up, preferred two years of college.

Environmental Stewardship Director

The Environmental Stewardship Director will be responsible for creating activities and programs for all aspects of summer camp (Resident Camp, Day Camp, Leadership Camps) that focus on environmental education, nature awareness, and care of the earth. Examples include (but are not limited to): Leading educational nature hikes, managing the recyling program at JKR, and creating "hands-on" nature related activities. The person in this position may also be asked to help out in other areas of camp life, depending on the need at the time. As part of the JKR Staff, these persons will receive pre-camp training and preparation, including Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR/AED certification, and be expected to serve in these areas as needed. Age: 20 and up, preferred 2 years of college.

Arts & Crafts/Media Director

The Media/Arts & Crafts Director (1 position available) is responsible for the planning, preparing, and executing Aarts and Crafts activities for resident campers. Duties include inventorying and ordering supplies needed, teaching skills, and encouraging campers in their artistic pursuits. The person in this position will also be responsible for photographing life at camp as well as managing the camp photo website for parent viewing and ordering. In addition, any camp videos, blogs, or special media is the responsibility of the media coordinator. As part of the JKR Staff, this person will receive pre-camp training and preparation, including Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR/AED certification, and be expected to serve in these areas as needed. Age: 18 and up, preferred one year of college.

Health Care Director/Nurse

The Healthcare Director (1 position available) provides for the health of campers and staff; distributes medication; manages the infirmary; screens campers for health issues upon arrival; maintains health care records; administers minor first aid per doctor's standing orders; as well as participates in overall leadership and decisions regarding camp requirements. First Aid/CPR/AED certifications required. Prefer RN, LVN, EMT, WFR, Advanced First Aid or students in the health care professions will also be considered. Age: 21 and up, preferred 3 years of college.

Kitchen Support Staff (2)

Do you want to be involved in the life of summer camp, yet feel like you’re not quite ready to be a counselor? Do you like to cook, or do you want to learn how? Are you hard working, dependable, and can you learn quickly? Kitchen support staff will help the JKR Cooks prepare and serve meals during camp. Tasks will involve everything from cutting vegetables and preparing the salad bar, to baking bread, to helping with dishes, to taking care of the tasks required to feed and serve campers and staff. Age: 17 (rising high school senior) and up.
